How IB DP home tutoring should work for Gurgaon families

IB DP is the most specialised board we cover. The two-year programme structure, the internal assessment calendar, and the depth of HL subjects all change what a good tutor brief looks like. Families who do well are the ones who pick subject specialists, treat IAs as a planned engagement across DP1 and DP2, and accept honest advice about when online tuition is the better academic choice than a home match.

IB DP families in Gurgaon almost always come from one of the international or hybrid schools — Pathways World, Pathways Aravali, Lancers, Scottish High, GD Goenka, DPS International, Shiv Nadar, Gems International, and Manav Rachna International. The DP programme is structured very differently from CBSE Class 11 to 12 or ISC: chapters are sequenced by the school, internal assessments arrive at specific points across the two years, and the grading scale (1–7) follows criteria that bear little resemblance to Indian board marking. The tutor pool needs to understand this; we do not work with tutors who try to pivot from CBSE Class 12 into IB DP HL without recent DP experience.

HL subjects are where the bulk of our IB DP enquiries land — Maths AA or AI, Physics HL, Chemistry HL, Biology HL, Economics HL, Business Management HL, and English (Language and Literature or English B HL). Each has its own assessment shape, command-term sensitivity, and IA criteria. The tutor's job is to support the student across the full DP arc, not just for the May external exams. A strong Class 11 DP1 engagement often pays off significantly in Class 12 DP2 results because the foundation is in place.

Internal Assessments are one of the highest-value parts of the engagement. IAs in Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Economics, and Business Management each have specific criteria — the student is marked against those criteria by the school, not against a general impression. Good tutors help the student plan the IA, understand the criteria, choose a workable topic, structure the work, check the writing, and avoid common mistakes. They do not write the IA for the student. The IB takes academic-integrity rules seriously and so do we; tutors who cross that line are not on our active roster.

Class 11 DP1 is the foundation year and the year most families underestimate. The chapters covered, the IA topic choices, and the early TOK and Extended Essay planning all happen in DP1. A Class 11 student whose Maths AA HL or Physics HL is shaky pays for it consistently in DP2 and at the May exams. We work with DP1 families to build subject depth steadily — two sessions a week per HL subject is the typical starting cadence — and to plan the IA windows so they do not crash into the rest of the calendar.

Class 12 DP2 is more intense. The final IA submissions land between September and February depending on the subject, the school's mock exams arrive between November and February, and the May external exams sit at the end of the year. The brief tightens through DP2: IAs first, then mock paper practice, then past paper exam technique, then a tapered final fortnight. Most engagements move from two sessions a week per subject in DP1 to three sessions a week per subject in DP2's pressure windows.

Online tuition is more often the better choice for IB DP than for any other board we cover. The HL specialist pool is concentrated, and a tutor several sectors away may not support a reliable weeknight home slot — particularly for outlying corridors. The academic outcome decides the format. For senior IB DP HL subjects where specialist depth matters more than physical presence, online tuition with a strong specialist often outperforms a weaker home match. We discuss this honestly on the consultation call; we do not push home tuition when online is the better fit.

What a strong IB DP engagement looks like across two years

DP1 start: subject diagnosis, two sessions a week per HL subject, foundation work.

DP1 IA windows: tutor supports planning, criteria review, writing, and feedback.

DP1 to DP2 transition: subject depth holds, second specialist sometimes added.

DP2: cadence tightens, mock papers used, IAs completed.

Final months before May exams: past paper practice, exam technique, mistake retirement.

Final fortnight: taper, protect sleep, calm execution.

A well-run IB DP engagement is a two-year arc, not a one-year sprint. By the second half of DP2, the student should be entering each subject with planned IA work behind them, a clear sense of how past papers track to the May exam, and the confidence to handle command terms and criteria without prompting. We do not promise grades; we promise a careful, specialist-led engagement that gives the family their best shot at the score the child is genuinely capable of.
